These joints are supplied by small nerves called medial branch nerves. By temporarily numbing these nerves, your healthcare provider can assess whether they are the source of your pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a diagnostic test, not a treatment. If the block reduces your pain, a longer-lasting procedure called radiofrequency ablation (RFA) may be recommended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>Before the Procedure<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No fasting or special preparation is needed \u2014 you may eat and drink normally.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Arrange for a ride home if possible. Sedation is usually not required, but it&#8217;s safest to have someone drive you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wear loose, comfortable clothing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>During the Procedure<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You will lie on a procedure table, usually on your stomach or side.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The skin over the injection site will be cleaned in a sterile fashion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using X-ray (fluoroscopy) or ultrasound guidance, a small needle will be positioned near the targeted medial branch nerves.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A small amount of local anesthetic (numbing medication) will be injected near each nerve.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The procedure usually takes about 15 minutes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>After the Procedure<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You may return to normal activities unless advised otherwise.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It&#8217;s very important to track your pain for several hours after the procedure:<br><ul><li>Use a 0\u201310 pain scale to record your pain level before and after the injections.<br>Try to perform activities that would typically provoke your pain.<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Record how much relief you experienced and how long it lasted.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sent your pain diary back to the clinic (the email address is printed on the pain diary form)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>Pain Relief Timeline<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If the medial branch nerves are contributing to your pain, you may notice relief starting within 15 to 30 minutes after the injection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Relief is typically temporary, lasting only a few hours.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A pain reduction of 50% or more suggests you may benefit from radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for longer-term relief.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We sometimes need to repeat the diagnostic injections a few times to clearly define the pain generators.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>Possible Side Effects<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people tolerate the procedure well. Side effects, if they occur, may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mild soreness or bruising at the injection site<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Temporary increase in discomfort<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rarely, infection, allergic reaction, or nerve irritation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the injection was in your neck you may experience dizziness or lightheadedness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>When to Seek Medical Attention<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Contact your healthcare provider if you experience:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fever or chills<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Redness, swelling, or discharge at the injection site<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Numbness, tingling, or new weakness in your limbs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Follow-up<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The physician will tell you when to make a follow-up appointment after your nerve block procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please bring your pain diary\/notes to your follow-up appointment or have them with you if the follow-up is by phone.
