They began their career at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton and served as the Program Director for the Anesthesiology Residency training program at the University of Alberta from 2009 to 2012. In 2013, Dr. MacNicol moved to Victoria and joined Dr. Daniel Vincent in what would become the Helmcken Pain Clinic. When Dr. Vincent retired in 2020, Dr. MacNicol took over the clinic. Under their leadership, the Helmcken Pain Clinic has developed into a true multidisciplinary pain clinic accredited by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia. Dr. MacNicol is the current chair of the Doctors of BC Section of Pain Medicine.
